Our Association

Our 2024 Association will be held on Saturday, October 12th. This year’s speaker is Mark Sappenfield

Mark has been editor at The Christian Science Monitor since 2017 and is currently living and working in Berlin for a year. Prior to taking the position of editor, Sappenfield was The Monitor's national news editor for three years and deputy national news editor for five. His previous posts involved reporting from South Asia, including Afghanistan and Pakistan as well as India; the Pentagon; the California Bay Area; and Boston. He has also covered seven Olympic Winter and Summer Games and reported on NASA’s Opportunity, Spirit, and Galileo missions from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Sappenfield began his career at the Monitor in 1996. He received his degree in journalism from Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia.

Mark has been a first and second reader in local churches and taught Sunday School classes at the Mother Church, from third grade to the post-high school class. He has addressed several Christian Science associations, as well as Christian Science nursing organizations and camps.

If you haven’t seen it already, his Peace Haven talk entitled, “What is the world asking of Christian Science today?” is worth a listen.  [ Watch on YouTube  |  Read Transcript ]
